How to spend a weekend in Marbella

1. Discover Marbella’s historic centre

If there’s one place you can’t miss in Marbella is the historic centre. It’s one of the best places to go in Marbella.

It’s home to whitewashed houses with beautiful blue flower pots hanging down the walls, narrow cobblestone streets and historic buildings.

Within the old town, you can find several churches like Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación and Cofradía Santísimo Cristo del Amor. The first one is definitely worth seeing.

However, the most important historical site is Marbella Castle. Unfortunately, there isn’t much remaining of it, so you’ll only see part of the walls and a tower.

Tucked away in Hospital Bazán Street, you can also visit the Spanish Engraving Museums. It’s a three-floor museum with interesting paintings, machinery and sculptures.

If you love shopping, there are also many lovely independent shops selling anything from bohemian dresses and unique jewellery to souvenirs.

After wandering the old town, stop by Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square). This is the heart of the old town and my favourite to sit down and people-watch. You can easily spend a few hours having a drink and chatting with a friend or partner.

Although I don’t advise getting food in this area because restaurants are overrated and expensive, I always grab a refreshing freshly squeezed juice from Churrería Ramón. I love their watermelon juice; it’s perfect for cooling down on a hot day in Marbella.

If you love photography, schedule a few hours to spend it here. The time will vary depending on the activities you choose to do.

For example, you can spend about 4 hours if you plan to take photos, visit the engravings museum and have a meal.

Last but not least, you can also visit Alameda Park, a few minutes walk from the old town. It has a beautiful fountain in the middle and tiled benches. This place makes you feel like you’re in an oasis with all the tall trees and plants.

2. Enjoy a walk on the beach promenade

Amare hotel in Marbella, Spain.

One of the best things to do in Marbella for free is to walk on the beach promenade. It goes all the way from the beach to Puerto Banus.

The best part is the one near the centre of Marbella. It’s here where you’ll find a wider selection of shops, restaurants and bars.

The beach promenade is very lively, especially in the evening in summer. Watch the sunset while sipping a cocktail at the chic beach restaurant and bar called Trocadero Playa.

Therefore, if you prefer quieter walks, go early in the morning; it’s completely worth it.

3. Soak up the sun at Venus Beach

Venus Beach in Marbella, Spain.

Are you visiting Marbella in the summer? Then you must hit the beach at least once.

Venus Beach is the most popular beach near Marbella centre. It’s accessible and safe, and it has fantastic facilities.

If you’re looking for less-frequented beaches, Cabopino Beach is always a good idea. This golden sand beach is just outside Marbella. Not only can you enjoy the calm atmosphere, but you can also go a short hiking route.

4. Taste delicious tapas at Casa Blanca

Russian salad and grilled prawn tapas at Casa Blanca Restaurant in Marbella.

Casa Blanca is my favourite tapas place in Marbella. It serves delicious and cheap dishes compared to other restaurants in the area.

The menu includes anything from pinchitos (marinated chicken skewers) to the classic tortilla and serranito (a typical sandwich made with pork, ham and peppers).

I highly recommend the Russian salad and prawn skewers.

If you fancy a wider variety of food, Casa Del Mar is another lovely restaurant a short walk from Casa Blanca.

5. Explore the luxurious area of Puerto Banús

A view of Puerto Banus and La Concha Mountain in Marbella, Spain.

Puerto Banús is the most famous area in Marbella. It’s well known for its luxurious shops, expensive yachts and restaurants. Rolex, Dolce & Gabbana, and Gucci are a few of the shops you can find in Puerto Banus.

Regarding food options, you have plenty to choose from, including British, Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. However, bear in mind that you’ll likely pay much more for a meal than in other neighbourhoods of Marbella.

I don’t have many food recommendations in Puerto Banús, but I love Rosas Cafe, located a short walk from the port. It’s the most instagrammable cafe in Marbella, with roses, pink decor and marble tables.

They serve delicious cakes and hot drinks. I especially like their lemon tart and matcha tea. Despite being more pricey than normal cafes, it’s worth visiting.

Overall, Puerto Banus is a good place to see and experience the atmosphere, but it’s probably the most touristy one too.

6. Treat yourself to a Michelin-star meal at SKINA

If you’re a big foodie, you’re in luck because Marbella has quite a few Michelin-star restaurants that are worth trying.

One of the most popular ones is SKINA, located in the historic centre of Marbella.

This two Michelin-star restaurant elevates its dishes by using fresh and seasonal Andalusian produce and applying unique techniques. The dishes are beautifully assembled and delicious.

Enjoy dishes such as white asparagus, seasonal mushrooms with eggs, and sea bass with a rich sauce made of crab, mushrooms and fennel, among other specialities.

I highly recommend booking a table in advance as they don’t have a big seating area.

7. Explore a nearby town

A pretty white building with flowers in estepona, spain.

If you plan to spend a long weekend in Marbella, I highly recommend visiting another nearby town.

You can visit Marbella attractions in two days, and even one if you plan your day well. Therefore, you might want to maximise your time in Costa del Sol and visit another town.

There are many incredible day trips from Marbella, so it can be challenging to choose one when you’re short on time.

So if you’re wondering how to choose a place other than another, I’d really think of the type of activities you want to do to help you decide.

For example, head to Malaga if you want a day packed with historical sites and museums.

If you don’t want to travel very far, Estepona is a lovely coastal town only a 30 minute drive from Marbella. It has the prettiest historic town in Malaga province (and it’s bigger than the one in Marbella) and stunning beaches.

Last but not least, if you want to experience an authentic Andalusian village, go to Mijas Pueblo or Istan.

8. Go on a sunset sailing tour

Cristina and partner at Puerto Banus, Marbella, Spain

Although the best way to visit Marbella is on foot, going on a cruise offers a different perspective of the city.

There are many great sailing tours, including those that are scheduled in the morning. But if you have the chance, go for a sunset one.

Nothing can beat the sky colours in contrast with the blue Mediterranean Sea.

This sunset sailing tour lasts 2 hours and includes a bottle of cava and white wine, unlimited beer, soft drinks and snacks. Enjoy your evening watching the beautiful sunset while sipping a glass of wine with your special one or friend.

If you want to book one for a special occasion, then this private sailing tour provides the intimacy you need.

9. Enjoy the views of Marbella from a rooftop terrace

Is getting a good view at the top of your list? Well, Marbella has many good hotels offering rooftop terraces where you can contemplate incredible views of Marbella’s old town or the coastline.

My favourite rooftop terraces are:

  • Benabola Sky Lounge (Puerto Banus)
  • VIRAZÓN (inside Lima Hotel in Marbella centre)
  • The rooftop terrace at Linda Hotel Marbella (in the old town)

How to get to Marbella

Bus stop for Marbella outside Malaga Airport.

Getting to Marbella is very straightforward. The nearest airport to Marbella is Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP), which is approximately an hour’s drive.

If you don’t want to rent a car, the cheapest way to get to Marbella is by coach. You can take the coach outside the airport by leaving the arrivals door.

The coach is quick, comfortable and affordable too. However, I recommend checking the times here, as they only run from 8:45 a.m. to 11:10 p.m. You can book a private transfer if you arrive at Malaga Airport outside those hours.

When to go to Marbella

Cristina walking on Carmen Street in Marbella, Spain.

There’s no wrong time to visit Marbella. It really depends on the activities you want to do.

Marbella is perfect for a summer holiday. You can enjoy its golden sand beaches, attend concerts and festivals like Starlite, and visit a famous beach club like Nikki Beach. Plus, the atmosphere is vibrant and lively.

However, if you don’t like crowds and prefer to sightsee or hike, consider late spring or autumn. During these times, Marbella enjoys milder weather more suitable for exploring the town and its surroundings.

Wondering about winter? Well, it’s a great winter sun destination. As a local, I wouldn’t think of swimming in the sea or going to the beach at this time, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see some tourists doing so.

Winter is a good time to see a more calmer side of Marbella. You’ll find fewer crowds and, therefore, be able to enjoy more popular places like the historic centre or Puerto Banus.

If you visit Marbella in December or January, you’ll get a taste of Spanish Christmas and its traditions, see the lights and go to the Three Kings Parade.

Where to stay in Marbella

The best area to stay in Marbella is the old town. You’ll be close to the main attractions, restaurants and beaches by staying here.

It’s the best-connected area. You can easily take a bus or taxi to other parts of the city, or walk to Marbella coach station, where you have more destination options.

Whether you want to stay in one of Marbella’s best beach resorts or in a cosy and charming house, these are my accommodation recommendations for a weekend in Marbella:

Linda Boutique Hotel. This lovely four-star boutique hotel is in the old town. It offers beautifully decorated rooms with all the amenities you need. The breakfast buffet is excellent, offering healthy dishes. One of the reasons I love this hotel is its rooftop terrace, which is perfect for watching the sunset.

I’ve personally stayed at Casa Aduar and loved it. You can read my review here.
