Nerja or Marbella? Why I Choose Marbella over Nerja

Which destination is better for a summer holiday: Nerja or Marbella?

Choosing between these two towns near Malaga isn’t easy. Both have renowned beaches and attractions, and they are simply beautiful.

Marbella is popular for its upscale resorts, renowned restaurants, luxury port, and idyllic old town.

In contrast, Nerja is most known for its stunning beaches and laid-back atmosphere. You get the feeling of being in a more authentic Andalusian coastal town, but it’s still touristy.

Having visited and lived near both destinations, I’m going to compare them from a local point of view.

You’ll discover which has better beaches, accommodation options, and attractions and, ultimately, which is best for you.

I personally prefer Marbella over Nerja because of the old town, diverse food scene, atmosphere and surroundings!

Nerja or Marbella? A Travel Comparison

Attractions

Nerja

In my opinion, the highlight of Nerja is its coastline. However, that doesn’t mean it only has beaches. You can find unique attractions in this charming town.

One of the main attractions in Nerja is Las Cuevas de Nerja. Besides finding caves in other coastal towns like Rincon de la Victoria, Nerja Caves are the best. They were discovered by a group of young men in 1959, and they’ve been a point of interest since then.

The rock formations in the cave are spectacular. Admire the stalactites, stalagmites and Neanderthal cave paintings.

Another must-see location in Nerja is Balcón de Europa. It’s my favourite viewpoint in Malaga because you get a view of the beautiful turquoise watercolours, the whitewashed buildings of Nerja and the mountains. It’s extra special in winter because you sometimes spot snow on the mountain peaks.

To access Balcón de Europa, you’ll need to walk through Nerja Old Town, which is also beautiful. Wander and stop by the independent shops to buy a souvenir or grab a refreshing drink.

Marbella

Marbella has the reputation of being an upscale holiday, but as a local, I’m happy to see that it’s been promoted for more than its top-notch resorts and restaurants.

Yes, Marbella is multicultural and has touristy areas, but you can also experience its charming and authentic side.

Marbella Old Town has to be the most beautiful location in the city. Whether you’re into history and art or photography, it’s the perfect place for you.

The old town is home to historic buildings, monuments and the Spanish Engraving Museum. It’s also the ideal place for taking the views while enjoying a cup of coffee, window shopping, or grabbing your camera and taking photos of Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square) and its surrounding streets.

Puerto Banús, of course, needs to be on your Marbella itinerary. It’s the most luxurious port in Costa del Sol. Apart from getting a feeling of what it is like, you can also visit its nearby beach or take a boat trip at sunset.

Something that most travellers forget to explore is the parks. I especially love Parque de la Alameda, Parque de la Constitución and Parque de la Represa. These parks are within walking distance from the historic centre.

In addition, Marbella is surrounded by stunning hiking trails, such as Dunas de Artola and La Concha, and you can also do fun activities like canyoning and horse riding.

Overall, Marbella has many things to do for all ages.

Accommodation

Nerja

hotel balcon de europa in nerja

Unlike Marbella, Nerja doesn’t have such a wide range of accommodations, especially if you’re looking for an upscale stay. In fact, there aren’t any 5-star hotels in Nerja.

On the positive side, it’s cheaper than Marbella, and there are some lovely B&Bs and apartments.

As it has fewer hotels, it’s worth searching for accommodation as soon as possible, especially if you plan your visit in the summer.

These are my hotel suggestions for Nerja:

Marbella

Linda Hotel Marbella, Spain

Marbella has plenty of hotels and fantastic beach resorts, so you’re spoilt for choice.

Let’s say you want to stay next to the beach; you can stay in a 5-star hotel like Puente Romano, perfect for families, or Amare Beach Hotel, an adult-only hotel with a lively atmosphere.

However, if you’re looking for apartments or houses that make you feel like home, you’ll also find many options.

What about the prices? Well, you’ve probably heard Marbella is expensive, and although it is compared to other towns, it’s possible to find charming houses and B&Bs offering reasonable rates.

These are my hotel suggestions for Marbella:

Beaches

Nerja

balcon de europa beach

Nerja is a paradise for beach lovers. Being from Costa del Sol and spending summers at home rather than travelling, I can confirm that Nerja has some of the best beaches.

Nerja beaches are characterised by crystal clear waters, awe-inspiring cliffs, cosy coves and beautiful natural surroundings.

Playa de Burriana is a top choice among locals and travellers. It’s accessible, close to the historic centre, and has great facilities and beach restaurants.

My favourite is Playa de Maro, which is very popular for water activities like kayaking and scuba diving.

The downside of the beaches in Nerja is that their shores are filled with pebbles, so I recommend packing some aqua shoes.

Marbella

Puerto Banus Beach, Marbella

Marbella’s coastline is also to admire. It has 24 beaches, and some have been awarded blue flags over the years.

The beaches in Marbella Centre are convenient and accessible while offering good facilities. However, I don’t think they are the best beaches in the city.

To discover the golden sand and quieter beaches, you must go to the beaches outside the centre. For example, Playa de la Real Zaragoza is one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa del Sol.

Other beaches that are worth visiting are Playa de Puerto Banus, located next to Marbella’s luxury port, and Playa de Cabopino.

Day trips

Nerja

a beautiful street in the town of frigiliana spain

Nerja isn’t far from quaint villages and large Andalusian cities like Malaga and Granada. You have many good day trips to take from Nerja.

These are some of my favourites and their distances by car:

  • Frigiliana (7 km, 13 minutes)
  • Almuñecar (21.9 km, 23 minutes)
  • Malaga (57 km, 50 minutes)
  • Granada (94.4 km, 1 hour)

Marbella

Marbella is surrounded by stunning destinations you can visit in half a day or even a full day.

These are some of my favourite day trips from Marbella and their distances by car:

  • Estepona (33 km, 25 minutes)
  • Mijas Pueblo (35.5 km, 30 minutes)
  • Malaga (60.1 km, 51 minutes)
  • Ronda (63 km, 1 hour 5 minutes)

Food

Nerja

sangria and mushroom croquettes

Nerja has good restaurants, especially for fish and seafood, and if you want to taste the local cuisine, you’ll love the food options.

Some of my favourite places to eat in Nerja are Bar La Puntilla (best for seafood and fish) and OCULTO (best for a special occasion).

Another emblematic restaurant is Restaurante Ayo, which is famous for its wood-fired paella. Of course, you can compare the paella in Valencia (the birthplace of paella) to the one in Nerja, but it’s delicious.

Marbella

There’s no shortage of good tapa bars and restaurants in Marbella. Fancy Spanish, Italian, Mexican, Japanese? You’ll find a restaurant for it.

For a taste of the local cuisine, you have good restaurants near the old town. I recommend Casa Blanca and La Niña del Pisto. The latter is one of the oldest tapas bars in Marbella.

If you want a top-notch dining experience, head to SKINA, a fantastic Michelin-star restaurant.

Another great thing about eating out in Marbella is that many restaurants clearly state the allergens and offer gluten-free and vegetarian options.

For a gluten-free treat, visit the Celicioso Cafe at Puente Romano Beach Resort.

Nightlife

Nerja

Although there are clubs where you can enjoy the party scene in Nerja, I think there are better places to enjoy the nightlife than Nerja.

Some nightclubs feel a bit tacky, so I can’t recommend specific ones, and this is why I would rather have a nice drink at a rooftop terrace like Terraza Buddha Lounge Bar. They have great cocktails and a good atmosphere.

Then you also have some El Burro Blanco Flamenco Bar, a restaurant hosting live flamenco shows.

Marbella

If you’re up for night outs and good parties, you won’t regret picking Marbella over Nerja.

During the day, you can head to some of Marbella’s most famous beach clubs, including Nikki Beach, Ocean Beach and La Sala By The Sea.

During the night, you can continue the party at a beach club or visit a nightclub like La Suite. Olivia Valere is also famous among rich people.

However, be aware that many beach clubs and nightclubs are only open during the summer.

Prices

Nerja

a street in the old town of nerja spain

Similarly to other Costa del Sol destinations, Nerja prices change depending on the season. You’re more likely to find better deals outside the summer months.

Nevertheless, Nerja is cheaper than Marbella, and you’ll especially notice this when it comes to accommodation.

Marbella

A square with restaurants in the historic centre of Marbella, Spain

Marbella is one of the most expensive towns in Costa del Sol, but you can experience it on a smaller budget.

How? My tips are to travel to Marbella during off-peak season, choose a locally owned hotel or apartment with a kitchenette, and eat in local establishments. I would also avoid staying in the Golden Mile or Puerto Banus.

Transport

Nerja

Staying in the historic centre? You can walk to the beach, restaurants and shops.

Nerja has a bus station, although it isn’t the typical bus station because it consists of several bus stops close to each other. From there, you can travel to further beaches like Maro Beach or even take a bus to Frigiliana.

In my opinion, Nerja isn’t as well connected to other towns, so I recommend renting a car to move around.

Marbella

If you stay in Marbella Old Town, you have many attractions, restaurants and beaches within walking distance, and you won’t need public transport.

From the old town, you can take buses to get to Puerto Banús, Cabopino and other areas. From Marbella bus station, you can take buses to Malaga Airport, Malaga and other coastal destinations.

You don’t necessarily need a car for your trip to Marbella, but it’ll make exploring other nearby towns so much easier.
