Which city is better, Granada vs Malaga? It’s a common question I get.

If you’re struggling to make a decision, I understand because both destinations are worth visiting.

Attractions

Granada

The Alhambra

Granada is a paradise for history and culture lovers; the Alhambra and the Cathedral of Granada are two examples of emblematic buildings in the city.

If there’s an unmissable attraction in Granada, it has to be the Alhambra and the Generalife Gardens.

Wandering the Alhambra is a unique experience. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has detailed Moorish architecture, marble statues, manicured gardens, and breathtaking views of the city.

You can easily spend 3 or 4 hours immersing yourself in this rich history palace and gardens.

I absolutely love exploring the Alhambra, particularly the Palacio de los Leones, which used to be a private residence for the royal family.

Other must-see historical buildings in Granada include the Cathedral of Granada and Corral del Carbon.

Malaga

The gardens at the fortress palace called La Alcazaba in Malaga, Spain
Garden at Alcazaba de Malaga

Although Malaga isn’t as famous for its historical buildings as Granada, you can visit sites rich in history.

The most emblematic building is Alcazaba de Malaga, located in the heart of the city. This early 11th-century fortress palace takes you back to the Muslim period in Southern Spain. Learn about the history, wander its beautiful gardens with jasmine flowers and take in the views from the fortress walls.

Another important building that is linked to Alcazaba is Gibralfaro Castle, the biggest Castle in Malaga. Personally, I don’t think there’s much inside the castle, and I prefer the Alcazaba over Gibralfaro, but the views in Gibralfaro are better.

Finally, you can’t miss Malaga Cathedral, known as La Manquita, and if you love museums, the city is home to many interesting museums that range from dance and local traditions to art and music.

Granada vs Malaga, which one has better attractions? Granada’s historical sites, such as the Alhambra, are out of this world, and just for that, Granada is better for sightseeing. If you prefer museums, Malaga has many more museums than Granada.

Accommodation

Granada

Finding accommodation in Granada is easy, especially if you’d love to stay in the city centre.

From five-star hotels that look like palaces to unique boutique hotels with lovely views of the Alhambra Palace.

You can spend as much or as little as you want. If you fancy staying in a room with a view, you’ll pay more.

Here are some recommendations for accommodation in Granada:

Malaga

Whether you want a hotel room with sea views and a pool or a budget-friendly hotel in the centre of Malaga, you’ll find them all.

The centre of Malaga is the best place to stay in the city for first-timers, as you have everything within walking distance. However, if you’ve visited Malaga quite a bit, you might want to consider other areas or even nearby coastal towns.

Here are some of my recommendations:

Granada vs Malaga, which one has better accommodation? Personally, I prefer the variety of accommodations you can find in Malaga. Hotels tend to be more modern and taken care of. Nevertheless, you can still find beautiful hotels in Granada.

Beaches

Granada

Almuñecar beach promenade.

Granada City doesn’t have a beach, but the province has a good number of beaches, which are known as the Costa Tropical.

Granada’s coastline is less popular than the one in Malaga, but it has beautiful beaches like the ones in Almuñecar, Salobreña and Motril.

Malaga

Playa de la Calahonda, one of the most popular beaches in Nerja

Malaga is surrounded by the coast, and the city has plenty of beaches to enjoy; therefore, you don’t need to travel to other nearby towns to have a fun day at the beach.

Malaga and coastal towns are known as the Costa del Sol, and they are home to beautiful beaches; many are awarded Blue Flags because of their high-quality water, cleanliness, and facilities.

As a local, I can guarantee you’ll love the beaches of Nerja. Their crystal clear waters, natural surroundings and facilities are fantastic. Burriana Beach is the best beach in Nerja, but Maro Beach will also amaze you. The latter offers many water activities, such as kayaking and snorkelling.

Other good beaches near Malaga are Playa Bonita in Benalmadena and Cabopino in Marbella.

Granada vs Malaga, which one has better beaches? Malaga has more and better beaches, especially the ones in the Axarquia region, which includes the ones in Nerja.

Airport

Granada

The nearest airport to Granada is Aeropuerto de F.G.L. Granada-Jaén (GRX). It used to be an airport that only received national flights, particularly from Madrid and Barcelona, but this has changed, and you can find international flights too.

Malaga

Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) is the largest airport in southern Spain, so it receives many international flights from different parts of the world every year.

The airport is only a 15 minute drive from the city of Malaga and close to popular coastal towns such as Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Marbella.

Granada vs Malaga, which has a better airport? Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport is one of the biggest airports in Spain. It also has better international and national connections than Granada’s.

Day trips

Granada

Granada has some fun day trips that don’t involve travelling far.

The most popular day trip from Granada is Sierra Nevada, one of the best ski resorts in Spain. You can spend the day in the snow, skiing and doing other winter activities; just note that the snow season is between November and May. However, January to March is always the best time to visit Sierra Nevada to see snow.

Outside those months, you can also visit it but do different activities like hiking. You’ll be surprised by the amount of beautiful hiking trails you can find in the area.

Another great excursion from Granada is Las Alpujarras, a region located next to Sierra Nevada. It consists of 25 small mountain villages, each unique and beautiful in its own way.

Some of my favourite towns in Las Alpujarras are Soportujar, known as the witch village, Pampaneira and Lanjaron. The good thing is that you can visit these three towns in a day as I’ve done.

Malaga

a beautiful street in the town of frigiliana spain

Many travellers see Malaga as a short city break, but I always recommend spending more time in Malaga to explore its nearby towns and cities. It’s a fantastic base to explore Southern Spain.

You can explore Malaga’s whitewashed towns if you don’t want to travel far from Malaga but still explore beyond the city. My favourites are Mijas Pueblo and Frigiliana, both can be visited in a day, and I even advise visiting two towns in one day. Visit Fuengirola and Mijas Pueblo or Nerja and Frigiliana.

For a different day trip, head to Gibraltar. It’s a very popular day trip because it’s only a 1 hour and 40 minute drive and has lots of activities to do – from going to Top of the Rock, where you’ll be surrounded by monkeys, to shopping and wandering colourful streets.

Finally, it’s very easy to travel from Malaga to Granada. You can either drive or take the RENFE train. A day in Granada is perfect for exploring the Alhambra, soaking up the lively atmosphere and enjoying delicious tapas.

Granada or Malaga, which one has better day trips? It depends on the day trips you prefer. Malaga is better for visiting pretty coastal towns, Gibraltar and nearby Andalusian cities. Granada is better for skiing and nature-related activities.

Vibe

Granada

I love Granada and its atmosphere – its lovely cobblestone narrow streets, Moorish architecture, tea rooms and tapa bars. There’s something romantic about Granada.

However, it can feel crowded at times and touristy in popular attractions like the Alhambra or the Cathedral of Granada.

Malaga

Malaga is home to me, and the atmosphere is vibrant and lively.

I love summer evenings in Malaga. The sky colours, tourists and locals walking or enjoying a meal in the port and the sea breeze make them memorable. Also, there are plenty of festivals taking place in the summer.

Although it is lovely, it can also feel a bit crowded and touristy in some popular areas.

Granada vs Malaga, which one has a better vibe? Granada has a more romantic vibe than Malaga, whereas Malaga has a fantastic atmosphere for the ultimate summer holiday. There are many events going on in Malaga in the summer.

Food

Granada

Granada is one of the best cities in southern Spain to have tapas. You can easily spend the afternoon or evening going from bar to bar to enjoy a few drinks and tapas with friends.

And if you prefer to have a sit-down meal, there are amazing restaurants with a view. Restaurante Mirador de Morayma offers delicious food to have while contemplating the breathtaking views of the Alhambra.

Malaga

The food scene in Malaga is wide too. There are many incredible restaurants, bars and rooftop terraces.

Although you can also eat tapas in Malaga in places like La Pechá, it’s better to sit down and enjoy some local delicacies.

Wondering what to eat in Malaga? Try its typical sardine skewers called espetos, fried fish or the refreshing ajoblanco soup, which is also a good alternative for anyone who is vegetarian.

Granada vs Malaga, which one has a better cuisine? There’s no winner. Granada has more traditional meat dishes, whilst Malaga has more traditional fish dishes. For tapas, I’d choose Granada, and for other dishes, Malaga.

Nightlife

Granada

Granada nightlife is lively and young. The centre of Granada is the place to party.

The good thing is that you can enjoy the nightlife all year round, unlike in other cities where the nightlife is much better in summer. When the university starts, the nightlife is even younger.

Malaga

The best time to enjoy Malaga’s nightlife is summer. You can party in the city centre but also go to the beach clubs near Malaga. However, you can also enjoy the nightlife in other seasons. But it isn’t the same.

Granada vs Malaga, which one has better nightlife? I’m not a party person to start with, but I’ve always heard from friends that Malaga has better nightclubs.

Shopping

Granada

What I love about shopping in Granada is the wide range of handicrafts and beautiful Moorish-style lamps, tiles and more.

Looking for those? Head to Calle Zacatín or Alcaicería, which are in the heart of Granada.

If you want to buy clothes in the high street shops you can find anywhere in Spain and beyond, you can visit Nevada Shopping.

Malaga

Larios Shopping Centre

Malaga is a shopaholic paradise. Calle Larios, Malaga Main Street is home to high street shops and independent shops selling local products and souvenirs.

Not far from Larios, you’ll also find El Corte Inglés, Centro Comercial Larios and Vialia Shopping Centre.

These shopping centres have everything you need, from clothes and perfumes to home decor.

However, if you’re looking for the ultimate shopping centre, Plaza Mayor is the one. It’s next to Malaga airport and has many restaurants and a cinema.

Granada vs Malaga, which one is better for shopping? Malaga is much better for shopping. There are more shopping centres, and you’ll also find more international brands in these.

Transport

Granada

Transportation in Granada is good, but the city is walkable, and there’s no need to use a bus or rent a car.

If you come to Granada by train, you can walk to the city centre from the station. It only takes 20 minutes.

Malaga

Travelling around Malaga is effortless. Transportation within the city has improved over the years.

You can travel from the airport to Malaga by bus, train, taxi or car.

Once in Malaga city centre, you won’t need to use transport as the city is very walkable. Most attractions are next to each other.

Granada vs Malaga, which one has better transport? Malaga has better ways to move around the city and beyond.

Prices

Granada

Granada isn’t expensive compared to Barcelona and Madrid, and it’s possible to travel in Granada on a budget.

Apart from accommodation, attraction prices aren’t always cheap; an example is the Alhambra.

Here are some price examples:

  • Meal at an inexpensive restaurant: €12.00
  • One-way bus ticket: €1.40
  • Alhambra entry ticket: €29.99

Malaga

Malaga isn’t an expensive city, either. Although the accommodation prices significantly scale up during peak season, summer, Easter and Christmas.

Regardless of accommodation, you’ll realise that Malaga is a very affordable destination.

Here are some price examples:

  • Meal at an inexpensive restaurant: €12.00
  • One-way bus ticket: €1.40
  • Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle entry ticket: €5.50

Malaga vs Granada, which one is cheaper? Apart from attractions, Granada is generally cheaper than Malaga.

Weather

Granada

The weather in Granada varies a lot from summer to winter. During the winter months, Granada is considerably colder than other Andalusian cities. The highest temperature is about 13 degrees Celsius, and the lowest is 1 degree Celsius in December.

On the contrary, Granada is extremely warm in summer; you can experience temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius.

Personally, the best time to visit Granada is spring. It isn’t too cold or hot, so the weather is pleasant to see and discover everything the city offers.

Malaga

The Roman Theatre in Malaga

Malaga is a destination you can visit all year round, but the best time to visit it will depend on the activities you want to do during your holiday.

Summers in Malaga are hot and sunny, so you can expect a high above 30 degrees Celsius most days. If you stay near the coast, you’ll be able to enjoy the sea breeze.

Spring and autumn are fairly warm compared to other countries in Europe, and winter is mild. Although there are a few rainy days, they aren’t very few and temperatures during the day are about 16 degrees or higher.

Granada vs Malaga, which one has better weather? Malaga is the winner because summer is cooler than Granada, and winter is milder.

Safety

Granada

Is Granada a safe place for travellers? I’d say so. I’ve visited Granada a few times and never felt unsafe.

However, I’d highly recommend watching your belongings in busy attractions like the Alhambra and areas like Albaicin and Sacromonte, where petty theft isn’t uncommon.

Almanjáyar, located in the northwest of Granada, is the most dangerous neighbourhood in the city, so don’t go there.

Malaga

Is Malaga safe? The short answer is yes. Having lived in Malaga for many years, I can say that I’ve never encountered any problems.

You can walk in the Malaga city centre in the morning or at night without feeling unsafe. It’s a busy area, and you often see police patrolling. Having said that, I would avoid walking on quiet and poorly lit streets.

Like any other city, Malaga has some neighbourhoods to avoid. These are La Palma Palmilla, Los Asperones and some parts of El Palo.

Malaga or Granada, which is safer? Both cities are safe, and you just need to be careful in the main popular areas.

Conclusion on Granada vs Malaga

Both cities are worth visiting, but ultimately it depends on what you love doing during your holidays.

Granada is best for sightseeing as the Alhambra is, without a doubt, one of the best historical buildings in Spain. In contrast, Malaga is best for a summer holiday, day trips and atmosphere. However, you can also find beautiful attractions and museums in Malaga.

Enjoy your trip!
