About Pampaneira, Granada
Pampaneira is a quaint small town located in the Alpujarras region, Granada. Due to its location, it belongs to Sierra Nevada National Park, alongside its neighbouring towns, Bubion and Capileira.
Its whitewashed buildings, cobblestone streets and views make it very picturesque, no matter where you look.
Because of its beauty and charm, it’s also considered one of the most beautiful towns in Spain and is included in the official list of “pueblos más bonitos de España”.
If you wonder what Pampaneira is famous for, it’s known for its historically whitewashed houses, its narrow arched streets (called tinaos) and traditional crafts and textiles, such as colourful carpets.
It’s definitely a town to add to your Spanish bucket list!
Things to do in Pampaneira
Pampaneira is a small town with some fantastic things to do in a day. Here are my favourite things to do in Pampaneira:
1. Wander its beautiful streets and alleys

The best way to explore Pampaneira is on foot. The town is home to a labyrinth of small and narrow streets with unique architecture that the Berbers created.
Be ready to see houses with flat rooftops with chimneys and hilly cobblestone streets with small canals where water runs through, and walk through the traditional “tinaos”.
The latter are small tunnels between the houses that were used as a water system.
The whitewashed houses with wooden doors and often decorated with plants are very photogenic. I couldn’t resist taking photos of every corner and realised why it’s among the prettiest towns in Spain.
2. See the public laundry house

Lavadero Antiguo de Pampaneira, also known as Lavadero del Cerrillo, is an architectural gem. This old laundry house was restored in 2019, but it dates back to the 19th century.
The public laundry house is located at the top of the town, so you can also stop to admire the beautiful views of the town and its surroundings.
3. Enjoy the atmosphere at Plaza de la Libertad

Plaza de la Libertad (Libertad Square) is the liveliest area in the town. Here, you can sit down at a restaurant and people-watch on a sunny afternoon and buy souvenirs, such as ceramic pots, jams, honey, and colourful carpets.
4. Visit Iglesia de la Santa Cruz

Iglesia de la Cruz is Pampaneira’s main church, located in Plaza de la Libertad. There’s no way to miss it, as the building stands out from the rest because of its ochre colour and Baroque architecture.
The church dates back to 1501, and here you can see some emblematic religious statues like Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.
5. Eat chocolate at Abuela Ili chocolate factory

If you love chocolate, you’re in for a treat! This chocolate factory and shop is in the middle of the town, so there’s no reason to miss it.
As you go through the door, you walk down to the shop and factory on the underground floor.
You can see interesting panels about the history of chocolate on the way down. Once downstairs, you find a counter full of different types of chocolate.
Whether you love milk, dark, or white chocolate, there’s one for you. Plus, there are many flavours (chilli, banana, caramel and more!) Abuela Ili chocolates won’t disappoint you.
I loved that as I looked around and decided which one to buy, the owners gave us a little bag with chocolate samples. Isn’t that great?
I can guarantee you’ll end up buying a few chocolates from Abuela Ili!
Visiting Abuela Ili’s chocolate factory was one of my favourite things to do in Pampaneira.
6. Visit the nearby town of Soportujar

A day trip to Pampaneira also gives you the opportunity to explore other nearby towns, and that’s exactly what I did.
There are many unique towns in the Alpujarra region, and it can be challenging to choose one or two.
However, if you’re after a quirky village, add Soportujar to your list. Plus, it’s only a 15-minute drive from Pampaneira.
Soportujar is known as the haunted village because it has a witch and superstition theme. When you visit this town, you can see plenty of statues of witches and other creatures, learn about its legends, and go on a hiking trail.
7. Go to Sierra Nevada

If you stay a few days in the Alpujarra region, why not visit Sierra Nevada?
Sierra Nevada is usually associated with skiing, but that’s not the only thing you can do there. It’s also great for hiking. It’s easy to spend a day there, but if you love skiing, it’s worth spending more time there.
One of my favourite accommodations there is El Lodge. It has cosy alpine-style rooms and a fantastic heated outdoor pool with mountain views.

Traditional events in Pampaneira and its surroundings
La Feria de Artesanía, Turismo y Agricultura Ecológica de Pampaneira
This crafts, tourism and food festival in Pampaneira is often celebrated towards the end of October until the beginning of November. It lasts approximately 3 days.
During this festival, Pampaneira becomes the epicentre of culture, showcasing the best artisanal products. You can find many stalls selling anything from cute baskets made of wicker and colourful clothing and carpets to jewellery and puppets.
Also, if you love food, you need to attend this festival. Try delicious traditional pastries, cheese, Iberian ham, jams, honey, chocolate and sweets, among other foods.
It’s a great festival to attend because of its local products, setting and atmosphere.
Fiestas patronales de Pampaneira
Pampaneira has many celebrations that pay tribute to the town’s patrons throughout the year. These are the most popular:
- Fiestas Patronales San Blas (around the 4th of February)
- Fiestas de la Santa Cruz (3rd of May and the second week of August)
During these events, you can expect live music, traditional dances, delicious local foods, and religious processions.
Fiesta de la Mauraca
Fiesta de la Mauraca is a celebration held in the neighbouring town of Capileira.
Every year, on the 1st of November, when All Saints’ Day is celebrated, locals and people from other towns and cities visit Capileira, eat roasted chestnuts, and drink anisette at night.
If you happen to be there, make sure to wear a warm coat and maybe a scarf, because it’s cold in the Alpujarra region at that time of year.
What to eat in Pampaneira

🥘 My recommendation: Restaurante Ruta del Mulhacén
There are quite a few options to have a meal in Pampaneira, especially near the main square. However, my top recommendation is Restaurante Ruta del Mulhacén, located less than a minute’s walk from the chocolate factory.
First, I suggest booking a table in advance because it gets busy on weekends, and sometimes during weekdays, especially if it’s a bank holiday.
They have two floors, but if you’re after a meal with a view, ask for a table on the outdoor terrace, which offers beautiful views of the church and the surrounding area.
The menu includes traditional dishes from the Granada and the Alpujarra regions, so you can taste authentic food.
Portions are generous, so you don’t need to order many dishes, as sometimes happens with other restaurants.
I ordered lomo de orza, a pork dish that also came accompanied by pisto (Spanish-style ratatouille), Poor Man’s Potatoes and a fried egg. It was hearty but delicious.
Other dishes you might also want to try are:
- Plato alpujarreño, which has pork, sausages, black pudding, potatoes, peppers and fried egg.
- Remojón granadino, a potato salad made with orange, cod, onions and black olives.
Where to stay in Pampaneira

When it comes to accommodation in Pampaneira, there aren’t many options to choose from.
It’s often a place to visit for a couple of hours or half a day; however, staying in the Alpujarras region is a good idea to explore all the little towns or if you plan to hike or disconnect from the bustle of the city.
Some recommended lodging options are:
Estrella de las Nieves
This 3-star countryside hotel offers cosy rooms with comfortable beds, ensuite bathrooms, flat-screen TV, air conditioning and free WiFi. Some also include a lovely balcony with mountain views.
The highlights of this hotel are its stunning views of the Poqueira Gorge and breakfast.
Dreams Alpujarra
If you prefer an apartment over a hotel room, Dreams Alpujarra is a better option for you.
The apartments have a rustic countryside style and have everything you need – from a fully-equipped kitchen and flat-screen TV to air conditioning, WiFi and a private car park.
In addition to this, you can also enjoy the swimming pool and BBQ facilities in the summer.
