Carmen de Aben Humeya Restaurant Review

Granada is home to many fantastic tapa bars and restaurants, but if you’re looking for a top-notch dining experience, you must visit Carmen de Aben Humeya.

It’s a very well-known restaurant located in the charming neighbourhood of Albaicin. You can expect delicious food while being in a fantastic location.

The restaurant met all my expectations! But if you’re unsure whether to go or give it a miss, I’m sharing my experience.

The short answer is it’s worth the money, but let’s go into more detail!

The location

One of the reasons my partner and I chose this restaurant was the location. It is located in the most lovely area of Granada, Albaicin, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

This historic neighbourhood has many cobblestone and hilly streets, so be prepared to climb up many steps. Believe me, it’s worth the effort.

The restaurant is nestled between two 14th and 15th-century Moorish houses, which are next to the first wall built in Granada in the 11th century.

Once you reach the restaurant, you aren’t far from the famous Mirador de San Nicolás, Granada’s most famous viewpoint.

As soon as the sun goes down, the viewpoint gets busy with tourists who want to enjoy one of the most breathtaking views of Alhambra.

The views are magical, and I love the atmosphere of a group of locals playing flamenco, but it isn’t all roses! It gets crowded, and it’s a bit annoying when people “fight” for a spot or put the camera in front of you to take photos and videos, so all you can see is that.

My advice is that if you plan to go to watch the sunset there, don’t turn up right before sunset.

Food at Carmen de Aben Humeya

You have the option to have lunch or dinner, but whatever time you choose, you book in advance because, surprisingly, this restaurant doesn’t open many hours.

It opens for lunch from 1 pm to 3:30 pm and for dinner from 8 pm to 10:30 pm.

Is lunch or dinner better at Carmen de Aben Humeya?

The menu is exactly the same for lunch and dinner, and you get the same amazing views of the Alhambra; however, seeing it during the daytime and nighttime offers different experiences.

We chose nighttime because we wanted to see the Alhambra light up, and we felt like it was more romantic than at lunchtime. Regardless of the time, I’m pretty sure you’ll fall in love with the place.

Now, here’s my honest review of the food! Overall, I really enjoyed all the courses. We ordered a starter to share plus bread with dippings, two main courses and a dessert.

The first time that came was the crunchy and warm bread with a curry and vegetable sauce. It was perfect to nibble on something while waiting for the starter.

We ordered the Carpaccio of shrimp from Motril with lime, mandarin and yuzu oil for the starter. I didn’t know what to expect, but it was my favourite dish. You get different textures and flavours, but they all combine perfectly. It’s hard to explain, but I highly recommend this dish if you love seafood.

For the main courses, I ordered the sea bass filled with beetroot puree, courgette and miso sauce, while my partner ordered the roasted monkfish over quinoa with a Mozarabic sauce.

My sea bass was perfectly cooked, and I loved the flavours of the puree and courgette. I also tried a bit of the monkfish, which was good, but I preferred my dish.

Last but not least, dessert! I would have liked to try the cheesecake with red fruit cream, but they didn’t have it on that day, so my partner couldn’t resist ordering the brownie. He’s a chocolate lover.

I like chocolate, but not overpowering chocolate desserts, and I feel like this one was good because I could taste the chocolate, but it wasn’t very strong. However, the scoop of mango ice cream on top of the brownie was the best.

Overall, it was a very good meal, and I felt like the portions were good. Not too small or too big.

Prices at Carmen de Aben Humeya

It’s a fine dining restaurant, so prices are expensive compared to any other restaurant in Granada. However, despite being a fine dining restaurant, I don’t think it’s as expensive as others.

Starters start from 15 euros, main courses from 19 euros, and all the desserts except the 2 people dessert tasting menu cost 8 euros.

Regarding drinks, they have a wide selection of wines, and the cheapest bottle of wine is 20 euros.

You can check prices on their website.

Conclusion

It’s very rare that I go to a place like this, but if you’re up for treating yourself and your partner, I highly recommend it. You can’t beat having a meal with views of the Alhambra and good company.
