My Review of Cuevas El Atochal Origenes

Are you planning to explore Granada Geopark and you’re looking for a unique accommodation? El Atochal Cuevas ticks off all the boxes.

On my first trip to Granada Geopark, I stayed at El Atochal Cuevas and couldn’t have picked a better place.

Firstly, you sleep in a cave house, which is something you must do when visiting the area. It’s traditional and unique to this area of Granada.

Secondly, these cave houses are well-equipped and have all the comforts you have at home.

Lastly, it’s the location, in the middle of nowhere with beautiful mountain views, that provides the ultimate relaxing getaway in Southern Spain.

This is just a summary of El Atochal. I’ve gone into more detail in this review based on my two-night stay.

About Cuevas El Atochal

El Atochal Origenes, cave houses in Gor, Granada.

El Atochal is the perfect getaway for nature lovers, allowing you to disconnect from the busy, tech-driven life and take you back in time.

Discover your roots and the geological and archaeological gems of the area.

Besides offering a unique experience, another reason to stay at El Atochal is its commitment to sustainability, dating back to 2022, when it renovated the caves.

Ecotourism is one of their main pillars. They take measures to reduce environmental impact, such as the responsible use of water and electricity, and collaborate with local businesses.

I love that they promote knowledge about the area, eco-friendly transportation, like biking, and the use of regional products.

Location

El Atochal Cuevas is in the heart of Granada Geopark, a short drive from the Pueblo Mágico of Gor. It’s unbeatable for anyone who wants to spend time in nature and disconnect from a big city.

The moment I stepped into El Atochal, I felt far away from the world and totally immersed in nature.

Since you’re in a remote location, you’re surrounded by stunning mountains, and you can listen to the tweets of the birds in the early morning. It’s refreshing and so beautiful.

There are no supermarkets, pharmacies or anything around within walking distance; you need a car to get to Gor, the closest town.

Accommodation

Sleeping in a cave house is a magical experience. I hadn’t done it until I visited Granada Geopark, and let me tell you, it made me feel like I was back in time, and this was mainly because of the type of accommodation, as the cave house had all the comforts of today’s world.

There are over nine caves to choose from, and each has a different layout and decor. I stayed in the 5th cave called Cueva Herrerillo, which is perfect for a maximum of four people.

My cave house had an open-plan kitchen with a small hob, a microwave and a fridge. There was a rounded table in the middle, a sofa and a grand chimney to warm up in the coldest days. It felt cosy and welcoming.

The bathroom had a shower and dispensers with shower gel and shampoo. It also comes with a hairdryer. I loved the touch of leaving some single CeraVe face wash.

This cave house had two rooms, one with a double bed and another with two single beds. While they didn’t have a proper wardrobe, there were some rails to hang your clothes on. And don’t expect doors, but curtains for a bit of privacy.

Facilities

There aren’t facilities in this hotel, but you have some beautiful outdoor tables, hammocks and chairs just outside the cave houses. I couldn’t resist having a hot drink at the outdoor table while watching the sunset. You might not be an early bird, but I totally recommend catching a sunrise at El Atochal. They’re so magical!

Since there aren’t any cafes, I suggest getting a room with breakfast. It’s reasonably priced, and it includes a good range of food such as cold meats, cheese, coffee, Cola Cao (a Spanish version of Nesquik), and lactose-free milk. While these will be ready for you when you check in, the freshly baked bread will be delivered to your door early in the morning.

If you love being active while on holiday, they have bikes available. I didn’t ride a bike during my stay, but there are some good routes, or you can visit the nearby ghost town, which has houses, a bar and an old Gorafe train station.
