New Year’s Eve in Malaga: Best Things to Do and Local Traditions
Are you thinking of spending New Year’s Eve in Malaga?
It’s one of the most magical days of the year, and luckily, Malaga is a fantastic place to spend it.
If you’re after a sunny and warm destination compared to other European cities, you’ll love spending New Year’s Eve in Malaga.
Having spent other NYE in other destinations, I can say Malaga doesn’t offer the stereotypical winter Christmassy atmosphere, but it has plenty of things to do and enjoy.
Go for a sunny morning walk on the beach promenade, visit some attractions and see its beautiful Christmas decorations, have a delicious dinner, eat the twelve grapes and dance all night long!
In this guide, I’ll tell you how to enjoy New Year’s Eve in Malaga and all about our traditions so you can celebrate NYE like a local.

Things to do on New Year’s Eve in Malaga
1. Enjoy a beautiful morning walk on the beach promenade

Start the last day of the year with a beautiful walk on the Paseo Marítimo (beach promenade). If you’re staying in the city centre, walk from Calle Larios to the beach promenade of Malagueta Beach through Muelle Uno.
You can walk all the way to El Balneario-Baños del Carmen, where you can stop for a coffee or orange juice or go back to Larios whenever you feel you’ve walked enough.
The walk to Baños del Carmen takes about 40 minutes, but it’s a relaxing path where you constantly enjoy the sea views.
2. Visit Malaga’s main attractions

Visiting historical buildings and museums in Malaga on New Year’s Eve is a fantastic idea because most people are preparing for the evening, so they won’t consider visiting these places, which means you can enjoy fewer crowds.
Regardless of the crowds, if you only spend a few days in Malaga, you want to sightsee as much as possible, and NYE can be your day to do so.
So, which places shouldn’t you miss in Malaga? Alcazaba de Malaga, the most beautiful fortress-palace in the city, Picasso Museum or Museo Casa Natal Picasso, if you love art, and Gibralfaro viewpoint for the city views and sunsets.
3. Go shopping

Malaga is the shopaholic paradise! There are plenty of shopping centres, high street and independent shops, and you don’t need to go far, you’ll find them in the heart of the city.
New Year’s Eve is a great day to treat yourself and buy something special to wear in the evening or on the New Year.
Calle Larios is a popular shopping spot, but you’ll also find Larios and Vialia shopping centres at only a 30-minute walk from the city centre.
If you prefer to buy from local shops, I highly recommend exploring the streets around Calle Larios or visiting the Christmas market stalls in Paseo del Parque or Muelle Uno.
Local tip
Sales used to happen after the Three Kings Day, but you can find shops offering amazing sales even before the new year starts. Pay attention to any shops that say “Rebajas” if you’re looking for a bargain!
4. Treat yourself to a delicious dinner

Most locals will have dinner with family or friends, but if you’re a traveller, you’ll likely need to find a good restaurant to enjoy your New Year’s Eve meal.
Most restaurants offer a set menu that typically includes a few dishes to choose from, along with a drink, and the average price per menu is approximately 30 euros.
NYE is very busy, so make sure to book your table in advance. Otherwise, you’ll struggle to find a restaurant without reservations.
El Mesón de Cervantes, El Pimpi, Príncipe de Asturias (located inside Gran Hotel Miramar) and Batik are some restaurants offering dinner on this day.
The first one offers a more budget-friendly menu, whereas the other restaurants have higher prices but provide unique experiences.
5. Gather at Plaza de la Constitución

Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) is the ideal location to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Malaga. The atmosphere is incredible, and if you love celebrating surrounded by people ready to welcome the new year, it’s the place to be.
Malaga’s Town Hall staff give away over 1,000 goodie bags to the first people to arrive at Plaza de la Constitución. After the grapes, expect music, dances and much more.

6. Party at a club
If you love a good party, New Year’s is a fantastic day to experience the nightlife in Malaga.
The old town of Malaga is home to many nightclubs and discos that offer an incredible night out with your friends. As it’s NYE, getting to some places, especially the popular ones, can be more challenging, and tickets range from 15 euros to 70 euros, which include at least a drink, depending on the club.
These are some nightclubs to check out:
- Mala Fama (€€)
- Discoteca Andén (€€)
- Sala Gold (€€€)
Local Tip
If you know you’ll spend New Year’s Eve in Malaga, check out the nightclubs beforehand. They often sell tickets a month in advance and sometimes early bird tickets, which will save you money, too. Getting your tickets in advance guarantees entry, and you won’t waste time trying to get to places!
7. Eat churros in the early morning

One of the most common traditions for partygoers is to eat churros in the early morning of New Year’s.
After a night out full of fun and dance, churros con chocolate can cure any tiredness.
Some of the most popular places to have churros in Malaga city centre are Casa Aranda and Tejeringos Coffee, my favourite!
Where to stay in Malaga on New Year’s Eve

The best place to stay in Malaga on New Year’s Eve is in the centre. You’ll be a stone’s throw away from the beautiful Christmas lights, buzzing atmosphere and events.
If you’d rather avoid the crowds, choose a neighbourhood like Pedregalejo or El Perchel, which are quieter and close to the city centre.
Alternatively, if you come to Malaga with your family or a group of friends and want a more private experience, consider staying at a country house. They’re very popular for NYE, so make sure to book it a few months in advance.
If you want further recommendations on where exactly to stay, here are my suggestions:
- For travellers who want to stay in the city centre: AC Hotel by Marriott Malaga Palacio and Only YOU Malaga.
- For travellers who want a luxury stay near the city centre: Gran Hotel Miramar GL
- For travellers who want to stay in a quieter area: Hotel ILUNION Málaga and Hotel Catalonia Málaga.
- For travellers who want a stay in the countryside: Casa Lorpica El Borge and Finca with a fantastic view of the sea and the mountains
New Year’s Eve in Costa del Sol

Malaga isn’t the only place to enjoy New Year’s Eve; you can still have a fantastic day by visiting the towns in Costa del Sol, like Benalmadena, Fuengirola or Marbella.
These are some of the main events taking place in these Costa del Sol destinations:
New Year’s Eve in Torremolinos. The main event takes place in Plaza de la Nogalera. Eat the grapes at midnight and enjoy live music and a fantastic atmosphere.
New Year’s Eve in Benalmadena. The main NYE party in Benalmadena is held in Plaza de la Mezquita. However, there are many hotels that also offer great dinners and entertainment on that night. One of them is Sunset Beach Club.
New Year’s Eve in Marbella. NYE celebrations are in Plaza de la Iglesia, in the historic centre of Marbella. You can eat the twelve grapes and celebrate the new year while listening to an orchestra and other live music. Then, continue the party at one of the nightclubs near the old town.
New Year’s Eve Traditions in Malaga
Spending the Christmas season in Malaga, as well as experiencing NYE, comes with lots of interesting traditions.
Whether you want to celebrate New Year’s Eve like a local or are just curious about what NYE is like in Malaga, these are some traditions that my friends and family, including myself, follow on the last day of the year.

Wear brand-new red underwear
Okay, I must admit it’s a weird tradition, but the most superstitious people make sure to buy brand-new red underwear to wear on New Year’s Eve.
But why red? It represents love and passion; however, it had a different meaning many years ago.
It’s believed that the colour was related to witchery and magic during the Middle Ages, and people couldn’t wear red clothes. However, it was also believed that this colour could bring luck, which is why the current tradition consists of wearing underwear so people can’t see it.
Therefore, if you want to be lucky, head to the shop and buy red underwear because most people think it doesn’t bring luck if it isn’t brand new.
Eat lentils on New Year’s Eve
Eating lentils on New Year’s Eve is a tradition that originated in Italy, and you’ll barely hear that Spaniards eat lentils after midnight (at least I haven’t).
However, I’ve always heard that eating lentils can bring luck, and some people have lentils at lunchtime because they’re more of a lunch than a dinner dish.
Eat the 12 grapes at midnight

You might have heard about the Spanish tradition of eating twelve grapes at midnight. It happens across Spain, and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t do this.
Basically, people will gather with family or friends to have a delicious dinner and hang around until midnight. Everyone gets their twelve grapes and favourite channel to watch Las Campanadas, ready around 11:30 pm, or leaves it to the last minute, like my family.
Then, you must eat these twelve grapes at the rhythm of the 12 chimes at 12 o’clock. It’s more difficult than it sounds!
So, what’s the meaning of eating twelve grapes and why twelve? People have always believed that grapes bring good luck, specifically twelve, because each represents a month of the year.
Local Tip
If you think you’ll struggle eating twelve grapes, go to a supermarket like Mercadona and get the ready-to-eat grapes. They don’t have peeps and tend to be smaller than the regular ones.
Cheers with champagne to welcome the New Year

In addition to the twelve grapes, there are many families that also welcome the year by drinking a glass of champagne.
If you want to attract love to your life, either from a partner or any type of love in your life, make sure to add gold, ideally a ring, to your champagne glass and don’t take it out until you drink.
What happens on New Year’s Day in Malaga?

New Year’s Day is usually very quiet in Malaga. Most locals and tourists have been either partying all night or celebrating NYE with their families until late.
Most shops and restaurants are closed, so don’t expect much to be going on. However, going for a nice walk on the beach promenade is always a good idea. Alternatively, you can explore Calle Larios and its small alleys at your own pace because it’ll be pretty quiet, so if you don’t love crowds, head there on New Year’s Day.
My family and I don’t do much on New Year’s Day; we take it easy and eat leftovers from New Year’s Eve.
If you go to a Spaniard’s house for New Year’s Eve, you’ll be amazed by the amount of food there will be on the table and understand why people often have leftovers on the 1st of January.
Leftovers from NYE are amazing because you don’t always get to try every dish, as there’s too much food, and you probably get full, so you can try it on New Year’s Day.

Hello Cristina Reina,
Hope all is well. I’m traveling to Malaga in December and I’m looking for a good New Years Eve event in 2023. Do you know or recommend a place where you can eat, drink and dance on New Years Eve. Possibly, a party Event.
Respectfully,
Nelson
Hi Nelson,
I’ve had a look for you, but many places haven’t officially announced the NYE parties yet.
If you want a quiet atmosphere, hotels like Gran Hotel Miramar and AC Hotel Malaga Palacio often offer New Year’s Eve dinners. El Pimpi also usually has a great menu. However, the best place to eat the 12 grapes and celebrate NYE is Plaza de la Constitución. The atmosphere is amazing.
Sala Gold is one of the most popular places to dance after the grapes if you like nightclubs 😊
Hello Cristina,
Thank you for the update. It is highly appreciated. Best wishes on this holiday season.
Respectfully,
Nelson
