Weather in Malaga in June

Market at Muelle Uno, Malaga Spain

The biggest question is whether June is warm enough to do all the water activities. Well, June is the first official month of summer in Malaga, but, in reality, the sunny and warm weather starts way earlier.

I feel like summer starts earlier every year. You can experience beach days as early as the end of April. As a kid, I used to go to the beach with my family before the school year finished in mid-June.

The average high temperature is 28 degrees Celsius (83°F), but it can reach 35 degrees Celsius (95°F) on the hottest days. The average low temperature is 18 degrees Celsius (64ºF) in the evening.

You can enjoy almost 15 hours of daylight in June, so there are plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors.

Here’s an overview of June weather in Malaga:

  • Maximum temperature: 28ºC (83ºF)
  • Minimum temperature: 18ºC (64ºF)
  • Average temperature: 22ºC (72ºF)
  • Rainfall: 1 day
  • Water temperature: 20ºC (68ºF)

Things to do in Malaga in June

1. Attend the Malaga Courtyard Festival

Cordoba is known for its courtyard festival, but it isn’t the only place celebrating it. Malaga has its own version.

The Malaga patio festival is usually celebrated at the end of May and the beginning of June.

Locals from El Perchel and La Trinidad neighbourhoods decorate their courtyards with colourful flowers, traditional ceramics, water features and religious figures and images.

It’s worth seeing them, and they give you an insight into Andalusian culture. These houses have elements of Muslim and Roman architecture, and the event promotes the cultural heritage and these districts, especially famous for flamenco.

2. Go to Aqualand

Are you looking for a fun activity for a group of friends or families? Aqualand is the answer.

This water park, located in Torremolinos, is the most famous on the Costa del Sol. It’s big, and there are many attractions to keep everyone entertained (yes, even the little ones).

It does get busy, so I advise getting there early and hiring a float because you won’t have to queue as much.

I’ve visited it with my family many times, but it’s definitely more expensive now. My recommendation is to book your tickets online as they’re slightly cheaper.

Another way to save money at Aqualand is to bring your own food, which you can eat in the designated picnic areas. The food restaurants in the water park are expensive, and the food quality isn’t great.

3. Spend the day at the beach

One of the best free things to do in Malaga in summer is visiting the beach.

You don’t need to travel far to go to the beach. If you stay in the city centre, La Malagueta is the most accessible. However, you aren’t far from other beaches like Huelin or Pedregalejo

Depending on the beach you visit, you’ll find different water activities, from hiring a pedal boat and paddleboarding to waterskiing.

Personally, the beaches in Malaga City aren’t the prettiest in the province, but they all have good facilities and are ideal for families.

If you want more idyllic beaches, I would go to Maro Beach or Carvajal Beach if I were you.

4. Hit the museums

Entrance of Carmen Thyssen Museum Malaga.

It can get pretty hot in June, and if you can’t see yourself in the hotel pool or beach, opt for visiting the museums in Malaga Old Town and its surroundings.

Malaga has over 40 types of museums where you can explore, learn new things and escape the heat.

For art lovers, I recommend the Picasso Museum (a must-see), Carmen Thyssen Museum and Centre Pompidou.

5. Enjoy refreshing summer dishes

Sliced tomato with olive oil and salt.

Of course, you can enjoy most dishes all year round, but certain foods taste better in season. They are more flavourful, and that’s the case with tomatoes.

Tomatoes, specifically the ones called huevo de toro, are juicy, refreshing, and so delicious. Sliced tomatoes with olive oil and a pinch of sea salt are to die for! (see photo above)

Other summer favourites include gazpacho (the traditional cold tomato soup), ajoblanco (cold almond soup) and ensalada malagueña (a salad made with oranges, cod and black olives).

All of these dishes are perfect for cooling you down on the hottest days.

6. Stand-up paddleboarding

With the gorgeous sunny weather in June, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports.

I’ve seen more and more people paddle boarding on the beaches of Malaga and the nearby towns. In fact, I tried it once, but I definitely need to get better at it.

You can rent a paddleboard yourself or join a group. These stand-up paddle-boarding activities are great because all levels are welcome, and you get to do it at the most magical time of the day: sunset.

One of my favourite places for this water activity and kayaking is Maro in Nerja.

7. Go on a sunset cruise

Sunset at Muelle Uno, Malaga, Spain.

If you love catching sunsets, going on a sunset cruise is definitely an activity to add to your Malaga itinerary.

You can enjoy the sunset from the Gibralfaro viewpoint or the beach, of course, but a cruise is a good choice if you’re looking for something a bit different and romantic.

Boat cruises depart from Muelle Uno, aka Malaga Port, but it’s a popular activity, so I recommend booking it in advance.

8. Day trip to Nerja

Nerja is one of the most popular day trips from Malaga, and you can visit it all year round. There isn’t a bad time to explore it.

But why June? I love June in Nerja because it isn’t as crowded as July and August, and the weather is perfect for a beach day.

Explore the historic centre of Nerja, buy a typical souvenir like a leather bag or honey, see the impressive stalactites at Nerja Caves and end up at the beach.

Nerja has stunning beaches, and many have blue flags. Maro Beach is my favourite for water activities like kayaking, but Burriana Beach is best for families and has more facilities.

Events near Malaga in June

Marbella Fair

Marbella Fair Sign 2024.

One of the best fairs in Costa del Sol, taking place in early June, is the Marbella Fair, called Feria de San Bernabe in Spanish.

It’s truly worth visiting if you want to experience an authentic local event while having a blast with friends or family.

Expect live performances, local food and wine and a lively atmosphere. It’s also a great event to interact with people from the area.

Torremolinos pride

Torremolinos has become one of the friendliest LGBT+ towns in Spain, and it hosts an annual festival in the first week of June.

The main event is the parade, which has fun floats, music, and thousands of participants.

Besides the parade, you can also enjoy other activities during those days. For example, you can attend festivals, visit exhibitions and film screenings, and even go to a beach party!

Noche de San Juan

Noche de San Juan is the main event in Malaga in June. The beaches are filled with locals gathering with friends and family to build bonfires on the evening of the 23rd.

People chat, eat, drink and wait for the fireworks at midnight in San Juan.

It isn’t my favourite event since the beaches get too crowded, and I don’t enjoy staying awake until very late.

Some people drink too much and don’t tidy up before leaving. This means that the beaches are packed with rubbish the next morning.

However, it’s worth experiencing it yourself. It can still be fun.

What to wear in Malaga in June

Packing for a trip to Malaga in June is very easy. You’ll essentially need summer clothes, anything from short dresses to swimming wear and flip flops.

It’s slightly cooler in the evening, so you might want to pack a light cardigan, but it’s likely you won’t need it.

Alongside summer clothes, don’t forget to pack sunscreen (I highly recommend SPF 50) and insect repellent because mosquitoes are common in Malaga in summer.

You have a great website with a lot of information.
My daughter visited Malaga last year and said it was amazing. We are trying to plan a trip in June of 2025 and are unsure if the resent flooding affected the area. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    1. Hi Myles. Thank you for your comment! We had torrential rain this last Wednesday too, which affected the city and its surrounding areas. However, Malaga city centre and many towns have already been cleared out. I walked in the city centre and everything seemed back to normal yesterday evening. I hope we don’t get more of these. Summers are usually quite dry, and we have no rain.
