The best things to do in Malaga for couples

1. Explore the beauty of Alcazaba de Malaga

A beautiful garden inside Malaga alcazaba fortress.

The Alcazaba de Malaga is one of the most romantic places to visit in Malaga. This Moorish fortress palace is a must-stop for anyone who loves history, architecture and amazing views.

Built between the 11th and 15th centuries, the Alcazaba has plenty of history. Due to its excellent location, it went from a royal residence to a strategic point of defence.

Visiting the Alcazaba takes you back to Moorish times, and it’s a unique experience. Explore its beautiful gardens scented with jasmine flowers, enjoy the peaceful noise of the fountains, contemplate the detailed architecture and walk on the walls to see some of the best views of Malaga.

You can book combined tickets to visit the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle. The castle has better views than the Alcazaba, but in my honest opinion, it doesn’t have much inside.

There is a fee to enter Alcazaba; however, you can visit it for free on Sundays from 2 pm, which I don’t recommend if you want a peaceful experience with your other half. Personally, I’d skip weekends and bank holidays.

2. Relax at the Arab Baths

One of the best things couples can do in Malaga is go to the Arab Baths. Hammam Al Ándalus is an excellent choice in the city centre. I’ve been there twice and really enjoyed the experience.

When I enter the Arab Baths, I feel like I’m transported to another place. The steam, smell, beautiful arabesque architecture and relaxing atmosphere make you relax and disconnect from the world with your favourite person.

Switch from cold and hot baths, enjoy complimentary Moroccan mint tea and have a massage.

It’s a great activity to treat a loved one, and it’s also a perfect activity for a rainy day in Malaga.

3. Go on a stroll through Muelle Uno

Muelle Uno always has a lively atmosphere; you’ll often see street performers, people having a few drinks with friends on outdoor terraces, and people taking photos.

It’s a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, and it’s an excellent place for a walk, watching the sunset, and window shopping.

Here you can also find many restaurants where you can have a meal and have beautiful views of the port.

My partner and I love watching the sunset here, especially from the upper side of the port, as you get a more panoramic view.

4. Have a cocktail on a rooftop terrace

Cristina in a rooftop terrace looking at the port of Malaga.

Rooftop terraces weren’t a thing in Malaga a few years ago, but they have become so popular that you can now find many of them across the city centre.

No matter what time you go, it’s magical to sit down and chat with a loved one and enjoy a cocktail or mocktail while contemplating the views of the city.

If you’re looking for the best rooftop terraces in Malaga, then head to Restaurante Rooftop AC Hotel, La Terraza de Valeria (see photo above) or La Terraza La Alcazaba.

The first two offer beautiful views of the port of Malaga, whereas the latter has the best views of the Alcazaba de Malaga and amazing seasonal cocktails.

5. Go on a catamaran boat trip

Is there anything more romantic than going on a sunset catamaran boat trip?

See Malaga from a completely different perspective, and enjoy the breeze of the sea and a glass of cava with your favourite company.

This highly-rated one hour catamaran cruise is perfect for couples who want to have a unique experience when visiting Malaga. It’s also very affordable.

6. Enjoy the views from Gibralfaro’s viewpoint

Gibralfaro’s viewpoint is, without a doubt, a romantic place to visit in Malaga.

Located at the top of the hill, just before Gibralfaro Castle, it offers amazing views of Malaga’s bullring, Malaga Park and the port. It’s a steep walk, but it’s worth it.

This is the best spot to enjoy the sunset, although it does get busy. Many locals and tourists go at this time to enjoy the pastel colours of the sky and take photos.

If you want to avoid crowds, I recommend going there at sunrise.

7. Go on a wine tour

El pimpi bodega, malaga winery located in the city centre.

Did you know that Malaga has excellent wineries?

The province is surrounded by high-quality soil where wine can be grown and produced. Sweet wine is the type of wine that is popular in the area, so you can find a wide variety of sweet wines from Malaga.

The best way to taste Malaga’s wines is to go on a wine tour in the city centre or in towns like Ronda.

Sip delicious wine and try traditional products while you learn about them, but if you want a more intimate experience, you can also book a private wine tour.

And if you love learning about wine, you should visit Museo del Vino (Malaga Wine Museum). The ticket includes access to the museum and a small tasting.

8. Hit the museums and art galleries

Picasso Malaga Museum, Carmen Thyssen Malaga and Centre Pompidou Malaga are only three of the many museums in Malaga. No matter what your interests are (music, wine, cars, etc.), you’re likely to find a museum for you.

Spend the afternoon appreciating contemporary paintings or unique objects with your partner before heading for a meal.

There’s a fee to enter many museums, but some, like the Picasso Museum, are free on Sunday afternoons.

It’s also worth checking out the museum website to see if there are any interesting events or workshops you can take part in.

9. Watch a flamenco show

The birthplace of flamenco is Andalusia, more specifically Seville, so watching a flamenco show might be on your list when visiting Southern Spain.

There are many fantastic live flamenco shows in the centre of Malaga, and one of the most popular shows takes place in Tablao Flamenco Alegria every day. You also have the option to have dinner while watching the show; however, you need to book in advance.

My partner and I went to Tablao Alegria and enjoyed the experience. We had a delicious dinner in the restaurant before the flamenco show.

The show lasted about an hour and it was quite fascinating to watch because my family dances flamenco but a different type of flamenco.

Overall, it’s a unique activity for couples who want to immerse themselves in Andalusian culture.

10. Go to Cine Albéniz

Albeniz cinema in malaga spain.

A fantastic date idea in Malaga is to go to Cine Albéniz. This cinema, located next to the Roman Theatre and Alcazaba Palace, isn’t a regular cinema.

The architect who built this cinema was inspired by historicist art, and you can appreciate the architectural style on its facade.

In this cinema, you can enjoy Spanish and Latin American films as well as international films in their original language but subtitled in Spanish.

11. Visit the Botanic Garden

On the outskirts of Malaga, close to the motorway, you’ll find Jardín Botánico de la Concepción, Malaga’s botanic garden.

This is a fantastic place to visit for couples who love nature because there are over 2,000 plants from all over the world, but that’s not all; the botanic garden is also home to a historic palace and beautiful monuments as well as easy to moderate hiking trails.

The natural surroundings and panoramic views of Malaga make it a very attractive spot for couples.

You won’t be surprised to know that many grooms and brides take their wedding pictures there. Malaga’s botanic garden is a fantastic place for special and romantic occasions.

12. Enjoy the sunset at Baños del Carmen

El Balneario de los Baños del Carmen, located on the east side of Malaga, is a unique spot to enjoy the sunset.

This restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean Sea is one of the most romantic places to have dinner in Malaga. The speciality is fish, but there are other traditional Andalusian dishes and rice.

The sea breeze, the ambience and the views are ideal for a special occasion.

13. Have a meal at Mirador de Gibralfaro

If you’re looking for a romantic place to have lunch or dinner, Restaurante Mirador de Gibralfaro won’t disappoint you. The restaurant is on Mount Gibralfaro, at the top of the hill, and it overlooks the city, offering some of the most beautiful views of Malaga.

The menu features Andalusian and local dishes, so you can try Malaga traditional dishes such as gazpachuelo malagueño (a cold soup with fish and mayonnaise) and berenjenas con miel (aubergines with sugar cane honey), among others.

My partner and I love their prawn stew (see photos above), fried fish and mango-style crema catalana.

Restaurante Mirador Gibralfaro is inside a parador, which refers to high-class inns built in unique rural spots or places of historical interest. Therefore, you might want to have dinner and stay overnight in one of its beautiful rooms.

14. Stay at Gran Hotel Miramar

hotel miramar malaga spain

Gran Hotel Miramar is a luxurious 5-star hotel located on the beachfront. This hotel is ideal for couples who want a top-notch experience during their stay in Malaga.

Not only does the hotel have an impressive facade and interior design, but the rooms are beautifully decorated and offer all the amenities you need.

The building has a history behind it, and walking into the hotel makes you feel like you’re in a palace.

Gran Hotel Miramar has two restaurants, one of them offering outdoor seating with lovely views of the beach and an incredible lounge and coffee bar.

If you want to treat your other half, they’ll love staying at this hotel.

15. Visit the beautiful town of Ronda

A view of the main bridge in ronda spain.

Ronda is one of the best day trips from Malaga because it has plenty of things to offer, and it’s also surrounded by other smaller but beautiful towns you can visit in a few hours.

Enjoy a romantic day out in Ronda by visiting the old town, which is home to museums like Palacio de Mondragón, a beautiful 14th-century museum with Moorish architecture.

If you and your partner aren’t into museums, walk on the beautiful streets, soak up the scenic views from Paseo de Ernest Hemingway and tuck in traditional dishes and wine.

One of the best places to enjoy a romantic meal in Ronda is the Sensur Gastrobar. The restaurant is beautiful, and the food is outstanding (it’s my favourite place to eat in Ronda!)

If you prefer a restaurant with a view, check out the Don Miguel Hotel restaurant, which offers excellent views of Puente Nuevo (Ronda’s bridge).

Alternatively, if you both love good wine, visit a vineyard in Ronda and taste some of the finest wines in the area.

16. Enjoy a meal at a Michelin-star restaurant in Marbella

Any foodie couple need to head to Marbella to try one of the many Michelin-star restaurants, which offer anything from local traditional cuisine to Asian or Mediterranean dishes with a twist, while providing a unique experience.

Some of the most popular Michelin-star restaurants in the town include Skina, Leña and Lobito del Mar. The last two are owned by chef Dani García, a reputable local chef.

17. Hike Los Montes de Malaga

Located 50 minutes from Malaga city centre, hiking in Los Montes de Malaga is one of the best things to do in Malaga for couples who want to connect with nature.

Go on walks where you can see riverbeds and beautiful pine trees and encounter fauna, especially birds of prey like eagles and kites, which are dominant in the area.

There’s no doubt you’ll see other enthusiastic hikers and bikers on your way to Los Montes de Malaga. It’s a popular place for active people.

18. Explore the whitewashed towns of Malaga

A street in frigiliana spain.

Explorers will love the fact that Malaga is close to many picturesque whitewashed towns, known as pueblos blancos in Spanish. These towns offer a completely different experience from visiting Malaga.

There isn’t a more romantic activity than going on a day trip to one of these towns with your loved one.

Wander the cobblestone and whitewashed streets, discover unique museums and monuments that tell the history of the town, and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere.

With so many incredible whitewashed towns, choosing which one is worth a visit can be difficult. Here is a list of my favourite ones and why you should choose them as your romantic day out.

  • Frigiliana. It’s considered one of the prettiest towns in Spain. Go there for incredible views of the coast and mountains, picturesque streets and local cuisine. You can’t leave Frigiliana without trying its aubergines with sugar cane honey. Spend half a day in Frigiliana and then head to Nerja to hit the beach.
  • Mijas Pueblo. Visit it for scenic coastal and mountain views, museum and art galleries and good hiking trails. You can visit Mijas Pueblo and Fuengirola in a day as both towns are very close to each other.
  • Ronda. Known for its spectacular bridge, Ronda has so much to do – from visiting its museums and going on a hike to tasting local wine and going to the first bullring in Spain.

19. Relax at Cabopino Beach

A beautiful sunset in Cabopino, Marbella.

One of the best things to do in Malaga for couples, and anyone really, is to go to the beach regardless of the season. In the summer months, sunbathe and swim in the sea; in the winter months, go on a stroll to the beach or the promenade.

Cabopino Beach is among the prettiest beaches in Costa del Sol. This virgin and golden sand beach, located a 45-minute drive from Malaga, is peaceful and provides a more intimate day at the beach.

In autumn, winter or spring, you can also go on the Artola Dunes trail, which is a beautiful and easy walk that goes through the coast. Avoid summer, as the temperatures tend to be high unless you plan this hike early in the morning.

20. Do water activities

If you’re looking for a water adventure with your partner, kayaking, paddle surfing, and snorkelling are excellent choices. While you can’t do this in Malaga city centre, you can travel to nearby towns to enjoy this water activity.

The best place to do water activities in Malaga province is Maro, situated in the east of Nerja.

📌 Book this boat trip with paddleboarding in Nerja. You’ll get to know the most beautiful natural spots of Nerja and Maro, including caves and waterfalls.

21. Stay in a rural house

Panoramic view of Parauta, Malaga, Spain.

Sometimes, all you need is an escape to the countryside with your loved one to disconnect from your daily routine and spend quality time with each other.

One of the best ways to do so is by staying in a rural house. There are incredible houses near Malaga – from rustic and cosy houses with fireplaces perfect for winter to rural houses with swimming pools and gardens ideal for summer.

22. Visit Torcal de Antequera

At only 1 hour from Malaga, you’ll find one of the most unique natural spots in the area. Torcal de Antequera is a nature reserve known for its unusual landforms and rock formations. It’s actually considered a jewel in Europe because of its characteristic karst landscapes.

Visiting Torcal de Antequera is free, and you don’t need to book in advance, so head to Antequera and spend the day exploring the beauty of this natural spot in Malaga with your favourite company.

If you prefer to gain some insights about the place and explore it with a professional local guide, you can also book a guided visit.
