The best day trips from Benalmadena
1. Malaga

• Distance: 30 minute drive
Malaga is the perfect day trip from Benalmadena for those who want to immerse themselves in the city’s culture.
There are many things to do in Malaga in a day, from visiting historical buildings and fantastic museums to eating delicious food and relaxing on La Malagueta Beach.
La Alcazaba is unmissable in any one-day itinerary to Malaga. This beautiful Moorish palace takes you on a journey full of history and architectural details. Plus, you can enjoy some of the most beautiful views of Malaga.
Other attractions to include on your list are Malaga Cathedral, Picasso Museum and Muelle Uno (Malaga’s port).
If you’re after authentic Malaga food, make sure to head to Mercado de Atarazanas. The market has the best local products and small bars where you can grab a glass of wine or beer and have pescaito frito (fried fish), and ensaladilla rusa (Spanish-style Russian salad), among other dishes.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Malaga: The quickest way is to get the Renfe Cercanías train because it only takes 30 minutes, whilst the drive can be longer due to traffic. However, driving to Malaga from Benalmadena is simple.
2. Mijas Pueblo

• Distance: 25 minute drive
One of the best day trips from Benalmadena is Mijas Pueblo. Not only is it close, but there are many fantastic things to do, too.
You don’t need a full day to explore Mijas, but you can easily spend half a day. Get lost in the narrow and cobblestone streets painted white and decorated with beautiful flower pots, go inside the small shops to buy unique ceramic plates and pots, and enjoy a meal alfresco.
In addition, you can soak in the magnificent views from the viewpoint next to the shrine and go to the chocolate museum.
If you’re a nature lover, you need to check out the scenic hiking trails in the area, too.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Mijas Pueblo: The quickest way is to drive via AP-7 and A-368. Just be aware that the road is hilly. If using public transport, get the M-112 bus from Puerto Marina.
3. Fuengirola

• Distance: 20 minute drive
Fuengirola is an easy day trip from Benalmadena, and although it isn’t my favourite Costa del Sol town, it has a few fun things to do.
For me, Castillo Sohail is an unmissable attraction in Fuengirola. This castle is on a hill and offers beautiful views of the coast. Entry is free, and it’s a popular spot for events and concerts.
Another activity I love is seeing the street art in the El Boquetillo neighbourhood. The murals are pretty impressive.
If you visit Fuengirola with kids, you can go to Bioparc Fuengirola, Sould Park Fuengirola, a small theme park near the port, and Aquamijas Water Park in the summer months.
However, if you want to visit a water park in Costa del Sol, I would choose Aqualand over Aquamijas because of its wider selection of attractions.
Last but not least, you have the option of spending the day at one of its beaches.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Fuengirola: Drive on the AP-7 towards Fuengirola. To avoid the hassle of finding a car park, take the Renfe Cercanías train. It takes only 20 minutes.
4. Marbella

• Distance: 40 minute drive
Marbella is a popular day trip from Benalmadena. This coastal town is one of my favourite destinations in Costa del Sol.
Each part of the town has something to offer. Puerto Banús is one of the most luxurious parts of Marbella. Here, you can see Ferraris and expensive yachts, buy expensive jewellery and clothes or treat yourself to a meal with a view.
However, I recommend exploring the old town for a more authentic side of Marbella. It’s a beautiful labyrinth of whitewashed streets with lovely flower pots hanging on the walls, independent shops and historical attractions.
On top of these two must-see places, you might also want to relax at Cabopino Beach or go to an exclusive beach club like Nikki Beach Marbella during the peak season.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Marbella: The fastest way to get there is to drive on the AP-7. This is a toll road. You can also get the bus from Puerto Marina, but it takes longer.
5. Estepona

• Distance: 55 minute drive
Overlooked by Marbella and other Costa del Sol towns, it’s a charming destination to spend a day.
The historic centre of Estepona is the prettiest in Malaga. You can spend hours exploring its streets, taking photos and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere of this place while enjoying a refreshing drink and the sun at a bar terrace.
The Orchid House is one of Estepona’s main attractions. It’s worth visiting if you love botanical gardens, especially orchids.
If you’re visiting Estepona on a summer day, spend some time at Playa del Cristo Beach, and if you’re visiting it in winter, walk on its lovely promenade.
Last but not least, I can’t forget to mention Selwo Aventura, an incredible safari located a few minutes before arriving at Estepona town. It’s a fantastic place to visit for families and anyone who loves animals.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Estepona: The easiest way to go to Estepona is to drive on the AP-7. This is a toll road. I don’t recommend using public transport to get to Estepona because it’s a hassle and takes too long.
6. Ronda

• Distance: 1 hour and 20 minute drive
Located on the mountainside, Ronda is a beautiful white town worth visiting, and you can see its main attractions in one day.
The main highlight of Ronda is Puente Nuevo, and when people think about Ronda, this bridge is the first image that comes to mind.
However, there are many more things to do in Ronda – from visiting its archaeological museum and hiking to enjoying the local cuisine.
Ronda is also famous for its wines, and it’s, in fact, one of the best places to learn about wine production in the region and taste Malaga’s traditional wines, including vino dulce de Málaga (Malaga sweet wine).
Although you can easily spend an entire day in Ronda, you might want to visit Setenil de las Bodegas on the same day. It’s only a 20-minute drive from Ronda, and it’s a one-of-a-kind town. Some of the houses are built into caves.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Ronda: The most convenient way to travel from Benalmadena to Ronda is by car. The best and fastest route is via A-357 and A-367.
7. Gibraltar

• Distance: 1 hour and 30 minute drive
If you love the idea of ticking off another country from your list, head to Gibraltar.
The country is tiny, so you can visit the main attractions in Gibraltar in less than 24 hours.
Go to the Rock of Gibraltar and the Upper Nature Reserve, home to St Michael’s Cave and other interesting historical attractions, see the cheeky macaques and enjoy breathtaking views of Africa and Spain.
Gibraltar is also a popular day trip for shopping. Products don’t include tax, so they’re cheaper than in Spain and other countries.
On your day trip to Gibraltar, you might also want to go to Catalan Bay, a beautiful small beach, or take a boat trip.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Gibraltar: The quickest way to get to Gibraltar is by car. Drive on the AP-7 and take the toll road. You can also get the Avanza L-313 bus in Puerto Marina, but it takes 3 hours. Besides driving, I’d recommend taking a tour.
8. Caminito del Rey

• Distance: 1 hour and 10 minute drive
Fantastic hiking trails surround Benalmadena, so you don’t need to go far to enjoy a day immersed in nature.
Despite this, you might want to visit the most scenic hiking trail in Malaga, called Caminito del Rey.
This walking route was considered very dangerous but has since been adapted for public use, and you can now walk there without concern.
This hiking trail takes through a beautiful path with outstanding views of cliffs, a valley, a river, and a hanging bridge.
The only downside of Caminito del Rey is that you must book your tickets months in advance; otherwise, you won’t be able to do it.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Caminito del Rey: The easiest route is the one that goes via A-357. It only takes 1 hour and 10 minutes.
9. Granada

• Distance: 1 hour and 35 minute drive
Who hasn’t heard of Granada? It’s one of the most charming cities in Andalucia.
Although one day in Granada isn’t enough to see everything this city has to offer, you can certainly visit its main historical buildings and experience its vibrant atmosphere.
On a day trip to Granada, there are a few sights you can’t miss. One of these is the Alhambra, Spain’s most visited Moorish palace complex. Visiting Alhambra is a unique experience, and spending half a day there is easy.
Another historical building you want to add to your list is the Cathedral of Granada. If you have time, make sure to wander the beautiful streets of Albaicín, have some delicious tapas, and watch the sunset at Mirador de San Nicolás.
If you have a sweet tooth, go to Ysla Bakery. They have a wide selection of cakes and pastries, including the traditional piononos. They’re delightful!
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Granada: The most convenient way is to drive there by taking the A-92 (road with tolls). Another way is to take the train from Benalmadena to Malaga, then a bus from Malaga coach station to Granada.
10. Tarifa

• Distance: 1 hour and 45 minute drive
When I think about Tarifa, the first thing that comes to mind is its extensive golden sand beaches. Its fantastic beaches with dunes and weather conditions make it one of Europe’s best places to surf.
Tarifa is a paradise for anyone who loves water sports activities, and you can also go horse riding on the beach.
Apart from beaches, the town is also worth visiting. Explore its beautiful streets, enjoy a few tapas on an outdoor terrace while people watch, and see important buildings such as the Castle of Tarifa.
If you love archaeology, I highly recommend visiting Baelo Claudia. It’s 20 minutes drive from Tarifa, but it’s worth it. You can see one of the best examples of Roman cities in the area and learn more about this civilisation.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Tarifa: Driving via AP-7 is the quickest way to get to Tarifa. Although it’s possible to use public transport, it involves taking different buses and doesn’t make it a day trip anymore.
11. Nerja

• Distance: 1 hour drive
Nerja is one of my favourite places for a day trip to the beach. The town is home to a few of the best beaches in Malaga, such as Playa Burriana and Playa de Maro. The latter one is fantastic for water activities such as kayaking and snorkelling.
However, there is much more to Nerja than beaches. You can visit Museo de Nerja and Nerja Caves, contemplate the views of Balcón de Europa, and wander the historic centre.
If you prefer exploring over relaxing at the beach, add Frigiliana to your list. This small town is a short drive from Nerja (about 10 minutes), and it’s been awarded as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain.
Go to the old town of Frigiliana to explore its charming whitewashed streets and have tapas on a rooftop terrace.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Nerja: Take the A-7 road, which takes about 1 hour. If you rely on public transport, take the Renfe train to Malaga, then take the bus to Nerja from Malaga bus station. This latter option takes much longer.
12. Casares

• Distance: 1 hour and 5 minute drive
If you love small, typical Andalusian villages with white-painted buildings, I advise you to check out Casares. It’s been nominated as one of the most beautiful towns in Southern Spain.
My favourite thing about Casares is the views. The town is surrounded by beautiful mountain views, and keep an eye out for eagles. I spotted quite a few the last time I visited it.
Walk its hilly cobblestone streets, visit Blas Infante’s house museum and see the castle ruins.
You’ll only need a few hours to explore it, so you can also visit another mountain town like Gaucin.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Casares: Drive via AP-7, which includes tolls, but it’ll speed up the car journey.
13. Almuñecar

• Distance: 1 hour and 10 minute drive
Just outside the province of Malaga, Almuñecar is a lovely coastal town to spend the day.
The town is home to several historical buildings, such as the castles of San Miguel and La Herradura.
For me, San Miguel Castle is unmissable. You can learn about the four civilisations that lived in the castle, see impressive towers and dungeons and walk on the walls to contemplate the best views of Almuñecar.
In addition to these castles, wander the old town, visit the archaeological museum and visit one of its botanical gardens.
In case you visit this town in late spring or summer, head to the beach. San Cristobal Beach is one of the most popular beaches.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Almuñecar: Take the A-7 road, which takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. An alternative option is to get the Renfe train to Malaga and then take the bus to Almuñecar from Malaga bus station. This latter option is much slower.
14. Juzcar

• Distance: 1 hour and 35 minute drive
Juzcar is one of the most unique towns in Malaga. It’s commonly known as Pueblo de los Pitufos (Smurf Village) because it’s painted blue and has statues of the Smurfs.
The town has become a popular destination since the last Smurf film was filmed there. Locals decided to keep their houses painted blue instead of repainting them white, as they used to be.
The best thing to do in Juzcar is to wander the town, discover all the statues, and take pictures of them.
🚗 How to get from Benalmadena to Juzcar: The only way to get to Juzcar from Benalmadena is by driving via AP-7 and A-397. Note the road to Juzcar is windy and narrow.
Conclusion on the best day trips from Benalmadena
Benalmadena is a short drive from incredible destinations to discover while in Costa del Sol.
The best way to travel to these locations is by car, as it lets you go when you want. Some of these places are difficult to access by public transport or simply take too long.
If you rely on public transport, take a day trip to Mijas Pueblo, Fuengirola, Marbella, or Malaga.
Enjoy these excursions from Benalmadena!
