Traditional breakfast in Malaga
If you’re all about tasting traditional food wherever you go, you’ll fall in love with Malaga cuisine.
It’s said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and Malagueños have a selection of delicious breakfast dishes to start off on the right foot.
The most traditional breakfast dishes in Malaga are:
- Pitufos. The translation of “pitufo” is “smurf”, and refers to small bread typical of Malaga. These sandwiches are often filled with ham and cheese (called “mixto”), ham, olive oil, and tomato (called “catalana”), and many other variations.
- Manteca colorá. It’s the heartiest breakfast popular among workers who work in physical jobs. It consists of toast spread with pork lard and seasoned with spices such as paprika, oregano, and parsley.
- Churros con chocolate. Churros aren’t only a breakfast option in Malaga but also in other parts of Spain. They’re very popular, and you’ll come across many cafes that serve homemade churros with thick hot chocolate.
All these breakfast dishes are accompanied by a good cup of coffee and, sometimes, freshly squeezed orange juice.
Coffee culture in Malaga

Malaga has a strong coffee culture. If you go to a traditional cafeteria, you must know how to order coffee. There is much more to it than the typical café con leche (coffee with milk).
I am not a big fan of coffee, and I would be lost ordering coffee, even if I am local, so don’t worry if you don’t know all the names.
The different names are based on the coffee-to-milk ratio in a cup when ordering a milk-based coffee.
These are some of the most popular coffees in Malaga:
- Solo: pure coffee without milk.
- Largo: It’s coffee with 90% coffee and 10% milk. It’s the well-known macchiato.
- Mitad: It’s 50% coffee and 50% milk. This is the traditional café con leche.
- Sombra: It’s 20% coffee and 80% milk.
- Nube: it’s the best option for those who like a splash of coffee. It’s made with 10% coffee and 90% milk.
The best places to have breakfast in Malaga
1. Casa Aranda

If you’re up for a classic breakfast, don’t look any further; Casa Aranda won’t disappoint you.
This traditional cafe is in the heart of the city and has been serving coffee, churros and chocolate since 1932, so it isn’t a surprise that it’s often busy.
Casa Aranda is just like what a traditional cafe looks like; it isn’t modern, but the quality of the food is good, and the prices are very affordable.
They have outdoor and indoor seating according to the season. Personally, there’s nothing better than enjoying churros con chocolate at Casa Aranda on a rainy day in Malaga.
🕗 Opening times: every day from 8 am to 2:15 pm and 4:30 pm to 8:15 pm
💶 Cost: between 3 and 5 euros per person

2. Tejeringos Coffee

Tejeringos Coffee is another great cafe for enjoying churros and traditional Andalusian breakfasts.
Here, you can try a twist on churros by pairing them with different sauces instead of the traditional hot chocolate. Choose from Nutella, white chocolate, Kinder or dulce de leche (caramel sauce) to dip your churros in.
They also serve delicious cakes, waffles, croissants and muffins, which are delicious alternatives to churros.
If you don’t fancy anything sweet, they have a good selection of sandwiches (pitufos). You can have the classic pan con tomate (bread with tomato), Iberian ham, Manchego cheese, tuna, sobrasada sandwiches and many more.
Last but not least, enjoy an orange juice, coffee, frappe, or smoothie. The freshly squeezed orange juice is my go-to!
🕗 Opening times: Monday to Sunday: from 8 am to 1 pm and from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
💶 Cost: between 4 and 6 euros per person

3. La Bella Julieta

La Bella Julieta is the place to go-to cafe for a combination of traditional and international breakfast. There are different locations across Malaga and Torre del Mar.
This trendy cafe offers delicious breakfast, quick lunches and mid-afternoon treats. You can have anything from a pan con tomate (bread with tomato) and a ham and cheese toastie to waffles and homemade cakes.
They also serve freshly squeezed orange juice, juices, smoothies, milkshakes, and different types of coffees, including the classic cappuccino.
Apart from the delicious food, the cafe’s decor is simple but beautiful, and the atmosphere is good too.
Not sure what to order at La Bella Julieta? My sweet recommendation is the red velvet cake. It’s spongy, moist and simply delicious!
🕗 Opening times:
Monday to Friday: from 7:30 am to 9 pm
Saturday and Sunday: from 8 am to 9 pm
💶 Cost: between 5 and 10 euros per person

4. Mala Leche – Coffee & Bakery

If you have a sweet tooth, Mala Leche cafe has so many options for you – from cakes and croissants to cinnamon rolls and the Argentinian alfajores! However, they also offer savoury options such as smoked salmon toast and ham, tomato, and olive oil toast.
There aren’t many tables inside, but there are plenty outside, so you can enjoy your cup of coffee or your preferred hot drink while soaking up the sunny, warm weather.
I went to have an afternoon snack with my friend, and we both ordered cakes and drinks. I really liked the chai latte and lemon poppy seed cake (see photo above).
🕗 Opening times: every day from 8:30 am to 8:00 pm
💶 Cost: between 5 and 10 euros per person
📍 Address: C. Castillo de Sohail, 1, Distrito Centro, 29005 Málaga

If cereals are your favourite breakfast or afternoon snack, The Cereal Boom Cafe is the perfect place for you.
This lovely cafe is located in the Soho neighbourhood, not far from Plaza de la Marina in Malaga’s city centre.
It’s very spacious and instagrammable too, but talking about food, its cereals accompanied with toppings are the best. Think about any cereal brand; you’ll find your favourite cereal in this cafe.
They have an entire wall with shelves full of cereals – from the classic Corn Flakes and Cheerios to Crunch, Lucky Charms and Dinosaurs. It’s perfect for a quick snap!
If you don’t fancy cereals, they also serve delicious smoothie bowls and toasts with savoury toppings like salmon and avocado.

6. Brunchit

Are you looking for an instagrammable cafe in Malaga? Then you must go to Brunchit Coffee & Kitchen.
This is an excellent place to have breakfast or brunch if you fancy an international breakfast, and the Bali vibes decor is available in some of their branches.
Here you’ll find the perfect Eggs Benedict, delicious and healthy avocado toast and sweet dishes like their Vegan Pancakes with roasted bananas and berries.
Regarding drinks, you’re also spoilt for choice. Have anything from natural juices and milkshakes to 100% organic coffee and frappes.
Brunchit is also your go-to place if you’re vegetarian or vegan, as they have a few options like avo toast, vegan burgers and açai smoothie bowls.
The only downside of this cafe is the price, as you can find many affordable cafes in Malaga. You really pay for the concept and unique decor you won’t find in traditional coffee shops.
🕗 Opening times: Every day from 9 am to 4 pm
💶 Cost: between 15 and 20 euros per person
📍 Address: Calle Carretería, 46, 29008 Málaga
7. La Desayunería Atarazanas

Located next to the popular Atarazanas Market, La Desayuneria is a fantastic place to have an American-style breakfast. Their speciality? Pancakes.
They serve delicious pancake stacks. The last time I went, I ordered the blueberry pancakes accompanied by homemade jam and maple syrup. They were delicious but quite big, so I couldn’t eat them all. My chocolate-lover partner had the chocolate cake and confirmed it was good.
If you aren’t a big fan of pancakes, they also have other classic American breakfast dishes like bacon and eggs and bagels, as well as mouthwatering cakes of different flavours (carrot, red velvet, chocolate and more).
🕗 Opening times: Every day from 9 am to 4 pm
💶 Cost: between 8 and 12 euros per person
📍 Address: C. Atarazanas, 10, 29005 Málaga
8. Bun and Coffee

If you’re team sweet breakfast, you can’t go wrong with a doughnut and coffee or tea.
Why bun? I think it has the best doughnuts in Malaga. Despite their sizes, they’re light and so delicious.
What makes me want to go back again and again is that they change the doughnut flavours every month, taking the season into account.
For example, I tried their cherry and peanut butter doughnut in July and believe me, it was so tasty.
For drinks, I’m not a coffee lover, so I always opt for matcha. Their matcha is really good, whether hot or iced.
🕗 Opening times:
Monday to Sunday: from 10 am to 7 pm
💶 Cost: between 5 and 7 euros per person
📍 Address: C. Duque de la Victoria, 11, Distrito Centro, 29015
9. Mia Coffee Shop
This cosy cafe is one of the best places to enjoy a cup of coffee in the SoHo neighbourhood.
The coffee shop offers a wide range of coffees – from espresso and mocha to filtered coffee, that can be served with regular milk as well as dairy-free options like oat and almond drinks.
Another thing to love about Mia Coffee Shop is its homemade vegan cakes and pastries. Their carrot and chocolate cakes are a hit.
🕗 Opening times:
Monday to Friday: from 8:30 am to 2 pm
Saturday: from 10 am to 2 pm
💶 Cost: between 4 and 8 euros per person
📍 Address: C. Vendeja, 9, Distrito Centro, 29001
10. Caramello Salato

Breakfast or brunch, Caramello Salato ticks off all the boxes for good food and decor. You can see pink and flower walls, a giant teddy bear and other pretty decorations.
I didn’t have many expectations, as some very aesthetically pleasing cafe spots are pretty but don’t deliver when it comes to the food.
However, I was very impressed. I had the eggs Benedict that came with a side of salad, and my partner had the pancakes. My eggs were cooked to perfection, soft and runny on the inside, and the bun and Hollandaise sauce were so tasty too.
My partner and I share the food most times, that’s what foodies do, and I can confirm that the pancakes were fluffy and flavourful.
🕗 Opening times: Monday to Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm
💶 Cost: between 12 and 15 euros per person
📍 Address: C. Carretería, 20-22, Distrito Centro, 29008 Málaga
11. Cafetería Dulce Dreams

Next to the Arab Baths in Malaga, you can visit Dulce Dreams cafe, which belongs to the Dulce Dreams Boutique Hostel.
They have outdoor and indoor seating as well as a rooftop terrace and serve a wide variety of cakes, sweets and savoury breakfasts.
I ordered a chai latte with oat milk and a waffle with fruit and syrup, both of which were delicious, and I highly recommend trying them! Also, their carrot cake is super spongy and full of flavour.
The only con about this cafe is that they don’t offer table service if you want to eat on the rooftop terrace. There’s no lift, so you end up taking the many stairs with a tray in your hand to reach the rooftop, but the views are beautiful.
🕗 Opening times: Monday to Sunday from 9 am to 9 pm
💶 Cost: between 5 and 7 euros per person
📍 Address: Plaza de los Mártires Ciriaco y Paula, 6, 29008, Málaga
12. Dulce Canela

If you have a sweet tooth, you need to try Dulce Canela.
I didn’t know about this place until I saw it on Instagram! I love a good cinnamon roll, so I knew I had to try this place.
I visited this cafe at its former location, but it has since opened in the city centre. The speciality is cinnamon rolls, and that’s what they basically serve.
From the regular cinnamon roll to cinnamon rolls topped with pistachio, cheesecake or key lime pie frosting. I’ve personally tried the pistachio one and loved it. It was fluffy and flavorful.
The only thing I wished for was more drink options.
🕗 Opening times: Monday to Friday from 10 am to 8 pm
Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 8:30 pm
💶 Cost: between 4 and 6 euros per person
📍 Address: Calle Fernán González, 29005, Málaga
13. O melhor Croissant da minha rua

Who doesn’t love a buttery and flaky croissant? That’s what you’ll find at this cafe.
They have strawberry jam, apple and cinnamon filling and chocolate croissants, but you can also add toppings.
I had the one with strawberry jam and couldn’t finish it. All croissants are huge, but you can ask for a takeaway box, like I did, if you can’t finish it.
🕗 Opening times: Monday to Sunday from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm
💶 Cost: between 4 and 6 euros per person
📍 Address: C. Atarazanas, 13, 29005 Málaga
Extra: Bar Mesón Paco

Okay, this place isn’t in Malaga city centre, but I’m including it on this list because it’s worth mentioning.
Bar Mesón Paco is a traditional bar that serves breakfast, and it’s very famous for its huge sandwiches. They aren’t the typical ham and cheese sandwich or bread with tomato you’ll find in other places for breakfast.
Their special sandwich consists of a viena (a smaller baguette-like bread) filled with a generous portion of Spanish potato omelette, pork fillet and aioli sauce. After one of those, you won’t feel hungry for hours if you manage to eat it all.
The only con about visiting this place is that it gets very busy. I had to queue for 20 minutes to sit down and have my sandwich.
🕗 Opening times: Tuesday to Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm
💶 Cost: between 5 and 7 euros per person
📍 Address: Pl. de las Brigadas Internacionales, 3, 29004 Málaga
Conclusion on the best breakfast places in Malaga
There are many good places to have breakfast or brunch in Malaga – from traditional toast with tomato and ham and churros to waffles and crepes.
If you want a delicious typical breakfast, I highly recommend Casa Aranda and Tejeringos Coffee, but La Bella Julieta is a good option if you want a bit of everything.
